The 'Little Devils' of The Stillwater Scene

July can be a difficult month for fishing stillwaters and often the best tactic to use is the imitative approach - that's why Diawl Bachs are some of the most popular flies to try at this time of year, and we've finally got our most popular Stillwater selection back in stock again:

Become A River Whisperer

In today's missive, I'm in the process of working my way around Scotland, and somewhere between booking the ferry tickets and sourcing the Avon 'Skin So Soft' (for the midges) I fell into reading about kelpies.

Straight from the 'Ass of a Duck' - CdC Shuttlecock Emergers

As we pass into July, this is the time for those idyllic fly fishing afternoons & evenings and what better flies to fish, for both Rivers & Stillwaters, than CdC emergers.

Try A Two Fly July

There's a question that comes up every season, usually when the water's low, the sun's high, and the fish have had several 'post-mayfly weeks' to look at everything in your box.

Be A Realist This Summer

As it's been so warm over the last week or so I've been visitng the river, but not with fly rod in hand. Instead, I've taken a seine net - a really fine gauze one that fits over my scoop net.

A Swedish Night Fly - The Nattsländа

It's properly hot out there. The kind of hot where you check the river in an afternoon, see absolutely nothing moving, and head home again. The fish are sulking on the bottom. The surface is flat and glassy and entirely indifferent to your best efforts.

Small Flies + Delicate Presentation = Summer Success

Now that the Mayfly season is starting to peter out throughout the UK. I wanted to try and get us ready for the more challenging part of the season - lower water and warmer weather = summer fly fishing.

What are you wearing under your waders?

Sorry to interrupt your Saturday, especially on such a nice day - that's why I'm sending this! I'd originally planned to send this email towards the end of next month, but as we are due to have some really nice weather over the next few weeks, I thought we should bring the launch forward.

Tippet, Tapers & Blue-Winged Olives

I want to talk about tippet. I know. Hardly the most glamorous subject. But hear me out, because I think most anglers - including some very good ones - are overlooking something quite important in their setup.

Tasty Terrestrials & Barbless Beetles

As the summer begin, those of you who fish regularly will have noticed that the bank-side foliage just seems to get denser every time you visit the water. These are ideal conditions for all sorts of insects to thrive, from small leaf-eating insects to hoards of beetles and ants. This is prime time for all terrestrial activity on both rivers and stillwaters.

With the Mayfly season just about over, it's time to make some space.

The Mayfly season has just about packed its bags for another year - and if your local river is anything like mine, the hatch has already started to fade to the odd late emerger and straggler drifting past while you wonder whether to bother changing patterns (again).
