The Caddis Collection No. 001 - from Barbless Flies
Thirty-six flies. Three patterns. One box.
New Zealand caddis hatches are rarely subtle - and the trout that respond to them are rarely forgiving. The Caddis Collection No. 001 brings together three complementary patterns, each chosen for a specific role on the water, that between them cover the range of conditions you'll encounter through a season's dry fly fishing.
The Rolls Royce Caddis - 12 flies, 4 each of sizes 10, 12 & 14
A detached-body caddis imitation tied with a hollow elk-hair wing, the Rolls Royce sits flush in the surface film rather than perching above it - a distinction that matters on slow, clear water where New Zealand browns have time to inspect. Highly buoyant and accurate in profile, it is equally at home drifted dead on a pool or skittered across the tail of a run.
The Tri-Colour Caddis - 12 flies, 4 each of sizes 12, 14 & 16
A classic French pattern - the Tricolore - and one of the finest floating caddis imitations we have found. Tied with hollow hair fibres that trap air and resist submersion, it excels in broken, faster-riffled water where visibility and buoyancy matter above all else. Fish it on a slightly heavier tippet than you might otherwise use; the tri-colour wing construction creates a gentle rotational drift that will twist fine leader material over a long day.
The Indicator Sedge - 12 flies, 4 each of sizes 10, 12 & 14
Purpose-built for buoyancy, the Indicator Sedge is the workhorse of this collection. It earns its name in the New Zealand context - carrying a weighted nymph in a dry-dropper rig across broken riffles without complaint. When the fish are sub-surface and the nymph is doing the heavy lifting, you need a dry that stays dry. This does.
All of our Boxed Fly Collections are presented in a Barbless Flies Slimline Silicone Box. Price includes FREE Tracked delivery - allow 10 working days.
PLEASE NOTE: Each of our selections are delivered in a Slimline Silicone Fly Box (with Magnetic Closure) - free of charge. These lightweight triangular-slit silicone fly boxes are ideal to carry all the flies you want for a day on the water. With their super slimline design (only 15mm deep), they will hold up to 93 flies and easily fit into a chest or vest pocket.
How to Fish Them - Each of the above patterns are incredibly versatile and can be fished in several ways depending on the water and fish activity:
-
Dead drift - Cast upstream into the evening rise, mend, let it travel. Start here.
-
The Twitch - Caddis swim to the bank before hatching. Occasionally, skate the fly across the surface during the drift. Trout know this behaviour. They respond to it.
-
Duo rig - pair it with a nymph on the dropper for rivers where fish are still holding deep but beginning to look up.
-
Stillwater - Floating line, figure-of-eight or static. In this heat, fish the margins in last two hours of light. Leave it, let any breeze take it and watch.
Our NZ Caddis Box contains a total of 36 flies - 3 separate patterns, 4 of each in 3 different sizes.
Please Note: All our boxed fly selections are shipped free of charge to New Zealand using a fully tracked service.
